NASA Astronaut Visits GMS & GHS On Thursday, May 4, Dr. Jessica Meir joined students and staff at GMS and GHS to recognize Maine Space Day. Dr. Meir hails from Caribou, ME and is a scientist and astronaut with NASA. In an engaging and informative assembly for grades 4-8, Dr. Meir shared with students her path to NASA from a small town in Maine. Her message was all about following your passion, not being afraid to make mistakes, and never giving up on your goals. MIW Art Show Many families and community members came out to enjoy the work of our students at MIW as they displayed their art work. So many creative pieces were on display, from fish to owls to a large Maine moose! Greely High School Recognized U.S. News & World Report ranked 22,000 U.S. high schools using the criteria below.  Greely High School was ranked #4 in Maine and #963 in the United States (top 4% nationally).   Criteria used to review high schools for state and national rankings: STEP 1  | Students perform better than expected in their state. We looked at reading and math results for students on each state's proficiency tests and then factored in the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, who tend to score lower. STEP 2  | Disadvantaged students perform better than state average. We compared each school's math and reading proficiency rates for disadvantaged students - black, Hispanic and low-income - with the statewide results for these student groups and then selected schools that were performing better than their state averages. Naturalization Ceremony Held at GMS Immigration officials held a Naturalization ceremony on April 7 at Greely Middle School that saw 31 people become American citizens.  All students in grades 6-8 attended this special event, learning in advance about the process of naturalization and watching as America's newest citizens were sworn in.  Many thanks to GMS teacher Andrea Levinsky and Community Relations manager Ashley Caswell for coordinating this event.  Naturalization ceremony Keynote speaker Ekhlas Ahmed speaks to the audience April 7 at GMS Newest Americans sworn in by U.S. Immigration officials National History Day Congrats to all of our National History Day students contestants for their outstanding performances at the state NHD competition at UMaine on April 8.   Maddie Albert (grade 8) -first place for Junior Individual Exhibit. Furniture Friends The GHS Community service club featured in WCSH story on "Furniture Friends", a volunteer effort to furnish those in need with furniture for their homes.  Many thanks all of the service club members and advisor Holly Susla for their many efforts this year in helping homeless veterans with blankets and coats, senior citizens with snow shoveling, and the furniture friends project.                                2017 CLASS A CHAMPS! Congrats to our boys' basketball team for winning the Class A state championship , the first time since 1998 for this program.  Facing Messalonskee for the championship at the Augusta Civic Center, the Rangers claimed the trophy with a 59-43 win, capping off a 22-0 season.  Great job boys and Coach Seaver for a flawless season.  Congrats to student athlete  Matt McDevitt, who was  named "Maine Mister Basketball 2017. Congrats also to the boys hockey team , making it to the Class B South final and fighting hard, losing in OT. Great season boys and Coach Motes.
