"Day of Welcome" Contributes to a Sense of Belonging A sense of belonging is important for all students as they enter school each morning. Staff members, administrators, a Board member, and the Cumberland Police department & Cumberland Fire/EMT gave students in grades 4-12 an extra welcoming greeting as they arrived at school at GHS and GMS 4-8 recently. The Day of Welcome is a way for the entire school community to show that each student belongs and we are happy to welcome them to school. Special thanks to GMS staff members Ali Waterhouse & Bobbi Goodwin for their leadership of this annual event. Veterans Day Activities In observance of Veterans Day, our schools provided a number of activities to educate students about the importance of the holiday and its place in our nation. 1st Grade Costume Parade Extravaganza First graders and their teachers donned their favorite costumes for a Halloween-style parade around the campus track last week, entertaining MIW students, staff, and parents. Characters such as Spiderman, Wonder Woman, pumpkins, ghosts, dinosaurs, and even a walking toilet were all part of the parade. GHS Homecoming Students asked for a homecoming dance and one was delivered. A beautiful event was held in mid-October in a rented dance hall tent complete with a wooden dance floor. About 300 students enjoyed the festivities and music for this special homecoming dance. Many thanks to Don Gray, Jim Hand, Katie Dexter, Don Foster, Joanna Foster, and all those who helped to set up and make this event one to remember. GHS Outing Club Returns After a hiatus, the GHS Outing Club returned this Fall, thanks to a state grant of $1500 that supports programs that connect teenagers with the outdoors around them.
