New State Assessment this Spring Students in grades 3-8 and the 3rd year of high school (juniors) will be required to participate annually in a new state assessment, replacing the Maine Educational Assessment. The NWEA (NorthWest Evaluation Association) provides Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) for English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math through an online format that will provide results much more quickly than in previous years. The state Department of Education is requiring that these assessments be administered this spring, and in both the fall and spring each year forward. Additionally, the Maine Science Assessment, new for the 2021 assessment administration and provided by New Meridian will be administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 11. Remote administration will be available for students who are not currently receiving in-person classroom-based instruction (if enrolled in the MSAD #51 Remote School). Black History Month Spotlight The GMS 6-8 Civil Rights Team honored Black History Month by making a "quilt" of famous quotes to commemorate the month. In Mastery classes, students heard a clip of Amanda Gorman talking about how she overcame her personal challenges to become the first African American Youth Poet Laureate. 2021 US Presidential Scholars Candidates The US Presidential Scholars Program recognizes "some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors."
