Middle Schoolers Study & Care for Kelp Seedlings

Robin Tiller's Science classes have been working with the Boothbay Sea and Science center to foster sugar kelp seedlings! For over a month we have maintained the seedlings while they grow large enough to be put out to sea. This week our seedlings were delivered to an aquaculture farm in Freeport where they will continue growing over the winter. In April, they will be hauled out and we can see how much they grew! When our seedlings arrived they were only about 2 mm long, and when they left, many were over 8cm! The goal of the program is to foster a deeper understanding of the seaweed farming industry and its growing economic role here in Maine. In addition, we will be connecting this project to our biodiversity unit this spring in science class. Here is the link to the project, as well as some pictures of our baby kelp from their first week to this week.

Time for Sledding in 4th & 5th Grade

With the first significant snowfall this season came sledding during recess at GMS 4-5 this week. Many thanks to the PTO for buying sleds for elementary students to enjoy a beautiful winter day.

Worms! Not Yucky in Science Class...

Students in Jessica Matt's 2nd grade class have been learning a lot about worms and how they adapt and multiply in optimal conditions. I enjoyed getting a closer look at some pretty cool habitats and worms that have been studied by the students over the last couple of months.
