MIW Thankful Trees

MIW students expressed how they are thankful for family, friends, school, teachers/staff, and books on the Thankful Trees in the school's common areas.

Many thanks to Greely PTO for supporting K-8 classrooms with $100 gift cards this fall & Foundation 51 for providing rolling mini-grants to teachers for help during the pandemic (coming soon).

Greely's Unity Chain Project

All students and staff in MSAD #51 have been invited to participate in a district-wide "Unity Chain" Link installation, representing the interconnectedness and diversity of all students. Each link is a student’s hand-written hopes and wishes for 2021. Collectively, we are better when we support one another and unify in support of each other's individual differences.

4th Grade Medical School Interns

Fourth graders had a special reading lesson this week...where they studied in "Medical School" how to perform text feature surgery. GMS 4-5 literacy specialist "Dr." Angela Campbell had a great time as a guest teacher. It was a way to provide connections between literacy and the world of work.

Sens. Breen, Daughtry Support Equity

Sen. Breen & Sen. Daughtry release statement supporting SAD 51

AUGUSTA — A recent news article highlighted an unfortunate clash between SAD 51 school board members, the district’s superintendent and a member of the community, centering on the district’s ongoing efforts to improve racial equity in the district’s schools. In response, Sen. Cathy Breen and Sen. Mattie Daughtry, whose Senate districts include SAD 51, issued the following statement:
“Across Maine and the nation, people are having hard, candid conversations about the far-reaching and powerful legacy of slavery in America. These conversations are long overdue. The recent efforts of the SAD 51 school board are just one local example of this larger, necessary work, and we applaud these efforts. Improving racial equity is vitally important, and it will take all of us working together to make sure our community and our schools are places where everyone truly feels welcome, accepted, and safe.

While conversations on this topic can evoke strong feelings in people, when we’re discussing something this important, it’s critical for everyone to treat each other with civility. We’re hopeful that this complex dialogue in Cumberland and North Yarmouth will proceed in a way that promotes safety as well as open, respectful discourse.”
