MSAD #51 in Top 5% of All U.S. School Districts

First Week of New Pre-K Program - Success!
Last week was the official start to MSAD #51's official Pre-K Program. The students were excited and ready to learn and play in their new classroom. Classroom rules were being made and new activities were being explored. Thank you to Mrs. Tasha Jordan for leading our youngest students in the school.

7th Graders Have Fun on Cow Island
Each year our seventh grade students participate in the Rippleffect Program on Cow Island. This three day overnight program will focus on building leadership and coping skills for the entire seventh grade class at Greely Middle School. Students will participate in a variety of team building exercises, outdoor adventure activities and environmental educational activities on Cow Island in Casco Bay.

This year we were fortunate to have the support of Portside Real Estate Group to help financially support the program as well as some families in the district that covered sponsorships of students to ensure that every seventh grade student could attend this wonderful program. Special thanks to those staff members who spend 3 full days and spend the night on the island with our students! To learn more about the 7th Grade Rippleffect Program, click here.

GMS Kindness Challenge
Greely Middle School has a new addition to their lobby - a kindness banner. If you are in the middle school, stop by the banner and "Be the 'I' in Kind."  Mrs. Hunter helped me be the "I" one day.

Meet Therapy Dogs Harper & Lu
GMS 4-5 students greet Lu
GMS 4-5 and GHS students have new faces amongst them...therapy dogs Lu at GMS 4-5 and Harper at GHS as part of our doggy therapy team.  Lu and Harper are both certified therapy dogs and spend their days being a calming and joyful presence for students.  Lu works with school counselor Ali Waterhouse at GMS and Harper works with health teacher Denise Allen at GHS.  Harper replaces Jade, who retired at the end of the school year after many years of service.  Welcome Harper and Lu!

Homeland Security Assessments
Starting this week, the US Department of Homeland Security is on site conducting "threat and vulnerability" assessments for each school in the district.  At the conclusion of the assessments in two weeks, Homeland Security will provide the district a report outlining recommendations for security improvements.

Summer Facilities Projects
The summer of 2019 was one of the busiest in recent years with regards to the amount of facility improvements completed in our schools.  Click the link below to see a complete presentation and photographs of each of the projects.

One of the projects was to renovate and expand the GHS cafeteria.  A popular new offering in the lunchroom this year is a slushy machine with three flavors to choose from, replacing the ice cream maker.  Also new this year are some outdoor tables for lunchtime eating.
