Update: December 17, 2018

French Partnership & Exchange

Greely High School students and their families played host to twenty French students from Barr, France. Our community welcomed the Barrois students into their homes, classes and lives. In addition to attending classes with our Greely students, the students from Barr visited local museums, such as the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, the Maine Maritime Museum, and the Maine State Museum. One of the highlights of this exchange was the immersion weekend in Québec City when 39 students, host students, and guests took part in an amazing weekend exploring the culture, history, music and cuisine of Québec.

New Street Signs

As part of our district-wide staff safety evacuation drill held this past October, one of the items for further review was the need to label campus streets for 911 purposes, as proposed by both the Cumberland police and fire chiefs. To that end, these street names have been pre-approved by the Town of Cumberland for 911: Campus Drive, MSAD 51 Boulevard, Gyger Way, and Hutchins Field Road.

Fill A Bus, Fill A Belly

Thanks to Greely PTO and MSAD #51 families for its support of the "Fill A Bus, Fill A Belly" community project, yielding what looks like a record amount of items and funds for the Cumberland
Food Pantry this year.

New Hoop for MIW

Many thanks to Foundation 51 for purchasing a new basketball hoop for the students at Mabel I. Wilson School. On Monday, November 19, the GHS girls and boys basketball teams joined the MIW students in trying out their new hoop at recess.

GHS Choral News

GHS Chorus at last holiday concert at the Cumberland Congregational Church
GHS provided the chorus for Portland Ballet’s production of The Victorian Nutcracker at Merrill Auditorium. Also, on December 12, the GHS chorus, Madrigals, and "Magicals" held their last concert at the Congregational Church after many years of the Church hosting this event. Future concerts will be held in the new Greely Center for the Arts. Many thanks to the Congregational Church and especially Senior Pastor Diane Benekamper for many years of hospitality. Choral Director Sarah Bailey and myself presented Diane a plaque at the concert in appreciation of her support.

Congratulations to...

Kyle Sidders, Class of 2019, who is currently representing Greely at Disney World after being accepted to the All National Honors Choir.

Congratulations also to the Robotic Club for their innovation at the competition at Cape Elizabeth. Laura Howe and Emma Gobeil won a special "Judges' Award" for Innovation.

Learning about WWII

Students in Mark McDonough's 8th grade GT seminar studied the impact of decision-making related to President Harry S Truman's 1945 resolve to use atomic weapons to end World War II. Students argued for or against the use of the atom bomb to end war with Japan and I had the good fortune to listen to their debate as I stepped into the character of President Truman. Great way to learn history!

Vance Benoit's class at GMS 4-5 learned about WWII & viewed artifacts from Mr. Benoit's father, who served in the army at that time. Newspaper articles from 1941, his uniform, hat & enlistment papers among items shared. Fascinating lesson in history.

One of our fourth graders (below) collaborated with a student from another school on a project about silk maps used in World War II. They co-presented remotely using FaceTime.]
