Update: October 2, 2018
Thank You to our Athletic Advertisers!
Over the course of the summer, our athletic advertisers renewed their commitment to MSAD #51's Athletics and we also added some new advertisers. Please check out our 3 sign boards located behind the press box, in the gym and the pool. This campaign raised $5,000 for our athletic programs. The ongoing support of these advertisers, along with the direction of the Athletic Advisory Board, made the installation of a new sound system outside on the Glenn Hutchins Varsity game field possible in mid-September. The new sound system provides better sound coverage for Greely's games with speakers directed and amplified directly to the crowd, with less "noise spillage" to our neighbors. Furthermore, in-game announcing will be more clear, and having wireless microphones and on-field communication will assist with all facets of contest management.
Thank you to these advertisers for their support of MSAD #51: Pray's Hardscapes, Terry Snow, Portland Sand & Gravel, Atlantic Physical Therapy, BEU, Allstate - Scott Parolin, R.W. Pre-K Update
The Board of Directors has decided to continue to place on hold plans for a pre-kindergarten program in light of the Legislature's most recent decision to convene a stakeholder group to study the feasibility of pre-K in Maine. Previously, the Board had approved a limited 16-student pre-K program, but tabled this decision until more information from the state is made available in order to plan a program that best meets the needs of students and is in line with state guidance. If you have any questions about this, please contact Jeff Porter, Superintendent.
What is a Chronic Absence?
Over 27,600 or 15% of Maine students are chronically absent, US Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights 2016. Students who miss school frequently are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, more likely to fail in middle school and eventually drop out of high school. Missing school, even in kindergarten, has consequences.
Absenteeism, starting in preschool and elementary school, is an early warning sign for subsequent school problems. Unfortunately, chronic absenteeism is frequently overlooked because schools and communities track only “unexcused” absences, known as truancy.
Chronic absence can be solved when:
- Schools, families, and communities work together to create a culture of attendance as early as preschool and kindergarten
- Student attendance is regularly monitored
- The barriers to getting to school are identified and addressed
