Senior Walk through GMS

Members of "Golden Grads" Class 1968 attend Class Day
Congratulations Class of 2018 and best wishes as you begin new adventures.  The Class of 2018 graduated from GHS on Sunday, June 3.  This was preceded by a special candlelight service on Friday evening, a "senior walk" through MIW, GMS, and GHS on Friday afternoon, and Class Day on Thursday.  We are very proud of our graduates!
Mr. McKeone & Ms. Jones congratulate 2018 valedictorian Gregory Pershing and salutatorian Peter Theodores.  Gregory was also named a 2018 Presidential Scholar, one of only 160 seniors to earn this distinction in the United States.

Outdoor Classroom Week
May 14-18 is international "Outdoor Classroom Week". Several teachers took their students outside for lessons this week to enjoy the fresh air and natural surroundings. Thank you to the Environmental Stewardship Committee for organizing this district-wide week. It was wonderful to see all the students enjoying some time outside while continuing their education.

Real World Learning in our Backyard
Over the course of the past few weeks, Greely High School Geometry CP students have been given the opportunity to see how the math they are studying in their classroom directly connects to and is used daily by Ledgewood Construction employees at Greely's Center for the Arts (GCA) construction site.

Students were first provided with a walkthrough tour of the building site where they could get a sense for the overall layout and for the context of a specific component of the auditorium's construction, the orchestra pit under the GCA stage.

Following that, students used Ledgewood's actual foundation and concrete detail blueprint plans to determine how much material would need to be purchased for the cement roof of the GCA orchestra pit. Mr. Scott Clark from Ledgewood visited students while they did this work, and then he shared with them the importance of mathematical precision to avoid waste on site, especially seeing as this calculation represented only one of scores of different concrete pours necessary to support the mass of the building. Students also got to think through the financial implications for the company caused by a lack of precision in employees' work.

Finally, Mr. Clark described the different skilled trades needed for this project. He shared that a particular need in this industry right now is for trained masonry workers, as retiring ones are not being replaced by younger ones yet. In this conversation, students saw how Greely's Habits of Work grading domains are consistent with the work habits of the highly employable in the construction trades -- i.e., arriving to class (work) on time and prepared, using appropriate tools and resources to confront challenges in learning (work), and contributing actively and respectively to collaborative tasks.

Geometry CP teachers Erin Pollock and Don Legere want to especially thank Mr. Clark and his Ledgewood crew for all his help in enriching our students' learning, as well as Ashley Caswell for assistance in the logistics of scheduling the tour and visit, and the support of their GHS colleagues in excusing students from other classes to accommodate it in the midst of a very busy work season for all involved!
